Background of the Study

Mobile applications are the primary conduit for digital banking services, and their usability plays a critical role in driving adoption. Heritage Bank has recently undertaken significant improvements to the interface of its mobile banking application, aiming to make the app more intuitive, user-friendly, and engaging for a diverse customer base. Enhancements include simplified navigation menus, streamlined transaction processes, and visually appealing design elements that cater to both tech-savvy users and those less familiar with digital banking (Ezenwa, 2023; Nwosu, 2023). By optimizing the user interface, Heritage Bank seeks to lower the barriers to digital banking adoption and encourage a wider range of customers to transition from traditional branch banking to digital channels.

The upgraded mobile app integrates features such as real-time notifications, interactive dashboards, and contextual help tools, which collectively improve the overall user experience. This interface redesign is based on extensive user feedback and data analytics, ensuring that the changes address common pain points and enhance ease of use. Furthermore, the app improvements support secure and efficient transactions, building customer confidence in digital services. In a competitive market, where convenience and efficiency are paramount, these enhancements are critical to driving customer engagement and loyalty. The digital interface not only simplifies everyday banking activities but also encourages users to explore additional digital services, thereby contributing to the overall growth of the bank’s digital footprint (Ibrahim, 2023).

Heritage Bank’s initiative reflects the broader digital transformation trends in Nigerian banking, where mobile technology is key to achieving financial inclusion and operational efficiency. This study investigates how mobile application interface improvements impact digital banking adoption, evaluating both the technical enhancements and the user-centric design modifications that drive increased usage.

Statement of the Problem

Despite significant improvements in its mobile banking application interface, Heritage Bank faces challenges in achieving widespread digital banking adoption. One primary issue is the uneven adoption rate among different customer segments. While younger, tech-savvy users readily embrace the new interface, older customers or those with limited digital literacy often experience difficulties navigating the app, leading to lower adoption rates in these segments (Oluwaseun, 2023). Additionally, inconsistent performance across various mobile devices—stemming from differences in operating systems and hardware capabilities—can result in a suboptimal user experience for some customers.

Integration issues with legacy systems can also lead to occasional glitches or delays, undermining the reliability of the app during peak usage periods. Such technical inconsistencies not only frustrate users but also diminish overall confidence in the digital platform. Moreover, the absence of a unified feedback mechanism for users makes it challenging for the bank to continuously refine the interface and address emerging issues promptly (Adebayo, 2023).

Furthermore, while the new interface has improved aesthetics and usability, the rapid pace of technological change necessitates ongoing updates and investments, which can strain the bank’s resources. These challenges underscore the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the mobile application interface improvements, with a focus on understanding the barriers to adoption and developing strategies to ensure a consistent and inclusive user experience.
